Selling Yourself Your Sales and Marketing Resume

A resume is your first opportunity to sell yourself to a future employer. Make it informative and easy to read and you'll increase your chances of getting the interview that gets you the job you want.

Your resume probably won't get you a job. What it should do is get you an interview that leads to a job. Here are some tips for writing a winning sales and marketing resume.

Know your industry.

What education and skills are needed for the job? Use your sales and marketing knowledge to highlight which of your skills and educational experiences best fit the job requirements.

Remember the basics.

While this may seem elementary, make sure your resume contains your work history, educational background, and contact information (address and phone number; email if appropriate) in an easy-to-read format.

Looks are (almost) everything.

Your resume should be organized, concise (no more than two pages—preferably one) and free from grammatical or spelling errors. Use an attractive format and good quality paper; white is still the most professional choice. Resume software or a copy shop with desktop publishing capabilities can help you produce a professional looking end product.

Include a cover letter.

A cover letter adds a personal touch and gives you another opportunity to sell yourself. Use it to relate specific reasons your sales and marketing experience make you the best choice for the company. Above all, encourage them to take the next step: ask them to call you for an interview; "Please contact me at your convenience to set up an interview," for example.

Some employers receive hundreds of resumes per day. Use these tips to make your sales and marketing resume the one that gets the job interview done.
