Choosing a Business Administration Career

Business administration is "…a degree with maximum flexibility that prepares you to excel in many different arenas," according to Marilyn Pincus in Your Bright Future in Business Administration. With this flexibility comes options. Take some time to consider your goals when choosing which field to enter.

A business administration degree can lead you in many directions, including into a career in advertising, banking, teaching, financial planning, public relations, purchasing, and many others. Here are a few things to consider when choosing your business administration career:
  • Your skills and personality. Do you like to work with people or alone? Are you shy or outgoing? Career opportunities exist for people of all personality types. An outgoing person, for example, might choose advertising or public relations. A more reserved person might opt for work in banking or public administration.
  • What do you want your work environment to be like? Do you want to work for a large company or a small one? Where would you like to live? What atmosphere do you prefer - friendly, highly competitive, or somewhere in between?
  • What are the demands of the job…and its rewards? What will your job duties include? What are the opportunities for advancement? What benefits will be available to you?
Some careers have great earning potential, but they require many hours of work and travel. Others may not pay as well, but they may be more flexible. You can check the 2004-2005 Occupational Outlook Handbook (http://www.bls.gov/oco) for information on business administration career working conditions and salaries.

If you're just starting out, this may seem overwhelming. For the sake of your future, do some research into the careers and companies that interest you to see if they match up with your ideals. You may not find the perfect fit, but you'll increase your chances of making a good choice.
