Classic Films about Journalism You Won't Want to Miss

Journalists have been portrayed in many different roles in film, from power-hungry narcissists to morally irreproachable truth-seekers. If you're considering a career in journalism, you'll want to watch how journalists have been depicted in cinema in years past.

Citizen Kane
Orson Welles is the genius behind this classic tale of power and the press. Welles directed, produced, and starred in the lead role as a publishing titan, a figure supposedly based on the life of William Randolph Hearst, newspaper magnate and publisher and one of the most important and controversial figures in journalism during his time. While the film was released more than 60 years ago, its themes remain relevant to those interested in pursuing a career in journalism.

All the President's Men
This story is about the investigative journalism that solved the mystery behind the Watergate scandal, which led to Richard Nixon's resigning from the Presidency. Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman star as Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, intrepid Washington Post reporters who'll stop at nothing to find the truth.

The Insider
Russell Crowe portrays a tobacco company executive who's been recently fired from his job with one of the largest tobacco companies in the United States. He colludes with a 60 Minutes producer to expose incriminating secrets of the tobacco industry. Corporate media politics, hard-hitting investigative journalism tactics, and personal integrity are all themes that factor into this racing, high-tension thriller.

His Girl Friday
This screwball comedy is about a star journalist and her former editor, who is also her ex-husband. Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell star as the film's center of amorous tension while providing rare views into what journalism was like for women during a time when fewer females pursued full-time jobs or professional careers.

Stimulate your enthusiasm for a job in journalism -- a career that's exciting enough to be reflected on the big screen in some of the 20th century's most memorable films.
