According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, competition for entry-level jobs in the field of public relations is expected to be strong for the next several years. These tips can put you in a better position for landing a job in communications.

Getting the right education is important for those seeking a job in public relations. According to the BLS, there is no single way to enter the field. However, there are steps you can take to improve your desirability to prospective public relations employers.

Get the Right Degree

To those interested in a public relations job, the BLS recommends getting a degree in communications, journalism, or a related field. Having strong oral and written communication skills is essential to success in public relations.

Complete an Internship

The BLS emphasizes the importance of securing an internship to jump-start a career in public relations. You may be able to find an internship with a local organization or company through your college or university's career services department. You can also search local newspapers or online job listings for internships in your area.

Learn the Joys of Networking

My alma mater often stressed the importance of networking. For example, if you're a woman interested in public relations, you may want to join Women in Communications, a national association of women in the communications field. Professional organizations such as these abound and provide opportunities for meeting others in your field of interest. Contact your local Chamber of Commerce for a listing of business networking groups in your area.

With these tips, you'll be a few steps closer to landing your first job in public relations.
