Multimedia agencies create interactive experiences that support marketing, educational, and entertainment efforts for a variety of industries.
Entertaining Online and Television Audiences
Much of the work performed by multimedia companies is designed to entertain targeted audiences. The Cartoon Network, for example, may hire a multimedia agency to create animated television shows or animated games on a website. Similarly, many television and cable stations have looked to multimedia companies to produce an online user experience that's comparable (in terms of entertainment value) to a traditional television production.
Crafting Brand Images
Promoting a product or developing a brand is another core function of a multimedia company. While advertising agencies may be involved in creating television commercials and print advertisements, multimedia companies specialize in creating marketing material that uses many different communications devices. For example, a cosmetics company may hire a multimedia agency to help craft a point-of-purchase marketing display, such as a video wall, a series of screens that convey a message about a company or product.
Supporting Education and Arts Institutions
In recent years, multimedia productions have played a larger role in creating engaging educational materials for schools, museums, and other arts and culture-related institutions that support education. Museums in particular are adopting technology to educate the public about history and the arts, using video, software, and animation to create DVDs, CD-ROMs, and interactive online user experiences.
If you are creative and technically savvy, you may be interested in pursuing an education in multimedia studies. The path to which a degree in multimedia studies can lead may go in many directions, leaning toward pursuits in the media arts or to more sales and marketing-oriented directions. Whichever area of multimedia studies you pursue, you'll enjoy a career that's always challenging and innovative.
